Each year, you’ll go through an intense, year-long creative process with your peers. You'll write an original musical based on the stories of your life and your ideas to create
a more just and peaceful world.

You'll also plan and complete Community Action Projects where you will put your ideas into action to improve the lives of people across New York City.
  • 1

    Audition
Participants are selected through a non-competitive, group audition process and based on your willingness to engage with your peers, confront the various issues that young people are facing, and commit to the goals of the program. No one is ever chosen on the basis of talent.
  • 2

    Issue Exploration
You’ll begin focusing on specific issues identified by one or more participants, such as racism, gender inequities, violence, or discrimination against youth. You’ll participate in performing arts workshops that help you understand the causes, dimensions, and complexities of each issue. Then you’ll translate what you learn into scenes constructed from your personal experiences.
  • 3

    Arts Training/Creating Artistic Work
You’ll participate in acting, improvisation, dance, voice, movement, singing, and playwriting workshops at each rehearsal. We'll focus on improving your performing arts skills and developing excellence as a personal and group standard for your show.
  • 4

    Sharing Your Story
You'll have the opportunity to share the story of your life with the group without interruption. Your peers will listen.
  • 5

    Rehearsals
You’ll create, write, rehearse, and refine your performance. Each cast member is responsible for creating their part in collaboration with other scene partners. The Artistic Director, Assistant Director, and volunteer acting coaches work to shape the scenes and ready them for the stage, but do not decide their content or outcome. Decision-making is based on consensus and active dialogue about the issues and messages to be presented.
  • 6

    Performances
You’ll invite your family, friends, teachers, and peers, as well as foster care, the justice system and educational system workers and leaders, to witness your performance. Your audience will experience a work of performance art that shares the reality of your life as a young person and your vision for positive change.
  • 7

    Community Engagement
You’ll work with your peers to choose community issues to focus your efforts. You’ll design and lead community action projects that will make a positive impact on the issues you identify as important and are capable of being completed in one day.
